Tux Typing and Klavaro are both free, open-source typing tutors — and they are aimed at different humans. Tux Typing teaches children with games and a penguin. Klavaro is a sober, multilingual tutor for older students and adults who want drills, statistics, and many keyboard layouts. Choosing between them is really choosing an audience.

How to Decide
For a child under 12, Tux Typing is the obvious pick — Klavaro’s drill-first design assumes a motivated, literate user. For a teen or adult — especially one learning a non-English layout or preparing for typing-heavy exams — Klavaro’s adaptivity and velocity modules are genuinely better tools, and its multilingual depth is the best in the free world. Many families use both in sequence: Tux Typing for childhood, Klavaro later. (We maintain a sister resource for Klavaro at klavaro.org.)
The Bottom Line
- Choose Tux Typing if: the learner is a child who needs games and gentle pacing.
- Choose Klavaro if: the learner is an older student or adult who wants drills, stats and many layouts.
