What is Tux Typing?
Tux Typing is a free, open-source typing tutor game for children, created by the Tux4Kids community. It teaches touch typing with structured Practice lessons and two arcade games — Fish Cascade and Comet Zap — and lets teachers and parents add their own word lists.
Is Tux Typing free?
Yes, completely. It is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL): no paid version, no trial, no in-app purchases, no ads. Details: Is Tux Typing Free?
What is the latest version of Tux Typing?
The newest release is source version 1.8.3 (August 2014) for Linux; the newest Windows build is the 1.8.1 installer. There is no newer edition of any kind. See the version guide.
Can I play Tux Typing online, without installing?
There is no official online version. Sites offering one are running a different game under the name. Your honest options are browser typing platforms, or the two-minute install — both mapped on Play Online.
Does Tux Typing work on Windows 11?
Yes, in most cases — the v1.8.1 installer generally runs as-is, and Windows 7 compatibility mode fixes most refusals. Full walkthrough: Tux Typing for Windows 11.
Is there a Tux Typing for Mac?
Only a legacy build from 2008–2010, which does not run on current macOS. There is no Apple Silicon or universal-binary version. The Mac guide explains the situation and the alternatives.
Does Tux Typing work on Chromebooks?
Not natively, but the Linux build (1.8.3) runs inside the ChromeOS Linux container on supported models. Steps and limits: Chromebook guide.
Is there a Tux Typing app for Android or iPad?
No official one exists. Listings using the name are unrelated. For tablets, a browser platform or the GCompris suite (which has a genuine Android version) are the honest routes — see GCompris vs Tux Typing.
Is Tux Typing safe for kids?
Yes, from the project’s real sources: open source, no ads, no accounts, no data collection, fully offline. Verify any copy by file name and size as shown in Is Tux Typing Safe?
How do I add my own word lists?
Inside the game: Options > Edit Word Lists — create a list (one word per line) and select it for the games. Free ready-made packs are on the word lists page, and the full guide covers TXT import and format rules.
Why won’t Tux Typing open on my PC?
Usually one of three things: a wrong/repackaged file, a missing compatibility setting, or a permissions/antivirus block. The ordered checklist is in Tux Typing Won’t Open, and the troubleshooting hub covers sound, keyboard, display and speed problems.
Who makes Tux Typing, and who runs this site?
The program comes from the Tux4Kids open-source community. This website, tuxtyping.org, is an independent resource — not the project’s official site; our About page explains the relationship and our download-source policy.
