Tux Typing Fullscreen & Window Size: Tiny, Stretched, or Stuck

Tux Typing’s display options predate today’s screens, so its window behavior surprises people: tiny on a 4K monitor, stretched on a wide one, or stuck at one size. Here is how fullscreen and window sizing actually work in this program, and the settings that tame them.

Fullscreen: How to Toggle It

Use the game’s own display option (Options menu) to switch between windowed and fullscreen. There is no modern borderless mode — fullscreen here means the classic kind, which on today’s systems usually scales the game’s fixed-resolution picture to fill the screen.

Common Problems and Fixes

SymptomCauseFix
Tiny window on a high-resolution screenThe game’s picture is fixed-resolution; Windows scaling does not magnify itUse fullscreen, or set Windows display scaling before launch; on the shortcut’s Compatibility tab, try ‘Override high DPI scaling’ → System
Stretched or squished pictureAspect ratio is stretched to the panelPrefer fullscreen on a 16:9/16:10 display; windowed mode keeps the true proportions
Black bars at the sidesNormal: the game preserves its aspect ratio in fullscreenNot a fault — leave it, or play windowed
Game opens off-screen (dual monitors)It remembers a display that is goneWindowed mode, drag it back, then re-enable fullscreen

Classroom Note

Fullscreen is the right default on shared machines: larger letters and fish, fewer distractions, and no accidental clicks outside the window. Set it once per machine along with the other defaults in our settings guide. If fullscreen causes stutter on a particular PC, that machine’s trade-off is covered in slow & laggy — windowed plus a driver update usually resolves it.

Linux and Chromebook

The same fixed-resolution logic applies in distro and Flatpak builds; your desktop’s scaling applies to the window. In the Chromebook Linux container, the game’s window is a Linux window — resize it like other Linux app windows, and expect letterboxing in fullscreen on very wide Chromebooks.
